Step 1: Identify Your Style & Vision
Before reaching out to photographers, take some time to define your vision. Do you prefer bright and airy images, or are you drawn to moody and cinematic tones? Do you prefer photos in colors or black and white? Are you looking for candid, documentary-style photography, or something more editorial and posed? Browsing through different photographers' portfolios will help you find someone whose work matches the style you love.
I personally love adding a crisp grain to my photos and editing some colors in an analogue-inspired way — but not everyone might like that! Make sure to check how a photographer edits and if their style aligns with what you’re looking for in your final images.

Step 2: Create a Mood Board on Pinterest
One of the best ways to clarify your vision is by creating a Pinterest mood board. This will help you gather inspiration and refine the type of images you want to capture. Use keywords like “couples photography aesthetic”, “editorial portrait inspiration”, or “moody outdoor photoshoot” to find images that match your desired style. Adding words like “aesthetic” or “cinematic” to your searches can also help you find visually striking references. Once you have a collection of images, you’ll be able to better communicate your vision to your photographer.

Step 3: Research & Compare Photographers
Once you have a clear idea of your preferred style, start researching photographers in your area. Look at their websites & Instagram profiles. Pay attention to consistency in their work, how they use lighting, and how they capture emotions. If you’re looking for a studio shoot, make sure the photographer offers studio sessions and specializes in that particular style. Some photographers work exclusively with natural light, while others have experience with studio lighting setups — knowing this in advance ensures your vision aligns with their expertise.

Step 4: Ask the Right Questions
When you’ve narrowed down your options, reach out and ask a few key questions to ensure they’re the right fit:
- Does their style align with the purpose of your shoot? For example, if you’re looking for a couples' photographer, check if they specialize in capturing couples.)
- Whats included in their packages?
- How do they handle posing and directing?
- What’s their communication process?
- Do they offer Zoom consultations, or is everything handled via email?
- Do they offer studio sessions if that’s what you’re looking for?
Step 5: Consider Your Budget & Value
Photography is an investment, so it’s important to balance budget with quality.
While pricing varies based on experience and services offered, choosing a
photographer based solely on price can lead to disappointing results. Look for
someone whose work you love and who offers a package that fits your needs.
Step 6: Connection & Comfort
Your photographer should make you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. A great way to gauge this is through a consultation or quick chat before booking. If you feel at ease talking to them, chances are you’ll enjoy working with them during your session too.
Step 7: Review the Contract & Details
Before booking, make sure to carefully review the contract, cancellation policy,
and what’s included in your package. This helps avoid any surprises and ensures
you’re both on the same page. Don’t be shy to ask questions in the process!
Step 8: Communication During the Shoot
Communication is key to getting the photos you envision. Be sure to share your
preferences with your photographer before the session — whether its a specific
shot, a close-up portrait, or a certain mood you want to capture. Also, if you have
a “better side” or things you prefer to avoid in photos, let your photographer know!
The more details you provide, the better they can tailor the session to make you
feel confident and happy with the results.
Step 9: Double-Check the Turnaround Time
You probably didn’t pay much attention to the turnaround time in the contract — but
it’s an important detail! Before finalizing your booking, confirm with your
photographer how long it will take to receive your edited photos. This way, you’ll
have a clear expectation and avoid unnecessary delays.
