We spent just three days in Oahu—and spoiler alert—it wasn’t nearly enough to fully explore this beautiful island! Before our trip, so many friends told me not to spend too much time on Oahu because it’s 'just too touristy'. I regret listening to them. Sure, if you stick to Waikiki, it can feel a bit like the Vegas of the Pacific, but venture out, and you’ll find an island brimming with hidden gems, natural beauty, and experiences that go far beyond the tourist crowds.

1. Snorkeling with Sea Turtles

There are plenty of snorkeling tours available — avoid booking directly from harbors close to Waikiki if you can. We made this mistake and ended up with an overcrowded group. Instead, drive up to a less touristy location for a more intimate experience with these gentle ocean creatures. You can find great options on GetYourGuide!

 2. Advanced Trail Riding

If you’re an experienced rider, head to Gunstock Ranch, the only place on Oahu that allows cantering and trotting. For beginners or those looking for a more relaxed pace, check out Hawaii Polo Oceanfront Trail Rides (right on the beach!) or explore Kualoa Ranch—also known as Jurassic Valley—on horseback.

3. Tour at Kualoa Ranch

A visit to Kualoa Ranch is an absolute must! Known as Jurassic Valley, this iconic location has been the backdrop for some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters and TV shows. Fans of Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, Jumanji, 50 First Dates, Lost, and Hawaii Five-0 will recognize the lush, cinematic landscapes instantly. Whether you choose a movie tour, a zipline adventure, or a rugged jeep tour (which I’m definitely coming back for), you’ll be walking—or driving—through scenes straight out of the movies.

4. Explore the Historic Town of Haleiwa

This one can be combined with the horse riding activities as all of the stables are located on the North Shore, same as Haleiwa — a charming town filled with local shops, art galleries, and delicious food spots. Make sure to try a classic Hawaiian shave ice at Matsumoto’s Shave Ice—a local favorite for over 70 years!

5. Visit the Banzai Pipeline

Catch the biggest waves and watch the world’s best surfers in action. The energy here is unreal! Important: Do not attempt to swim here—the waves are seriously intense!

6. Check Out the Volcom House

While you’re at the Banzai Pipeline, make sure to swing by the legendary Volcom House. It’s not just a hub for surf culture but also a piece of cinematic history, featured in the iconic surf movie North Shore.

7. Sunrise at Kawai State Scenic Shoreline

A short hike to the lighthouse offers stunning views. If you’re lucky, you might even spot whales jumping out of the water as you hike!

8. Picnic at Kualoa Regional Park

The beauty of this place absolutely blew me away. Pack a picnic, soak in the views, and enjoy the peaceful vibes.

9. Morning at Waimanalo Beach

Start your day with a stroll along this stunning beach. Soft sands, turquoise waters, and way fewer tourists than Waikiki—pure bliss!

10. Take a Helicopter Tour Over Oahu (or Visit Pearl Harbor)

For breathtaking views of the island, including hidden waterfalls, rugged coastlines, and iconic movie locations, a helicopter tour is a must. You can choose to fly with or without doors (for the brave souls out there), and it’s truly an unforgettable way to see Oahu from above.

PS. I missed it this time, but I’m so coming back to this island for a helicopter ride!

If a helicopter tour isn’t in your budget, don’t worry—there are still incredible experiences waiting for you! A visit to Pearl Harbor offers a mix of history, reflection, and stunning views without breaking the bank. The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is free to enter, and you can explore the museum, see historic exhibits, and learn more about the pivotal events of World War II.

For a small fee, you can also take a boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, which is an incredibly moving experience. It’s a chance to honor history while still enjoying the beauty of Oahu, and it’s perfect for those looking for a meaningful and budget-friendly adventure.

Breakfast Spots

Honestly, Oahu is packed with great breakfast places! There is one close to Waikik that I particularly liked as I’m an Eggs Benedict fan. It’s called Heavenly Island Lifestyle.

Dinner Recommendations

For a mix of delicious food and storytelling vibes, Duke’s Restaurant is a fantastic choice. If you’re looking for something a bit more low-key (and with a rooftop view) check out Tommy Bahama, located right above their store.

There’s so much more to explore on this vibrant island, but if your time is limited, this itinerary will ensure you hit some of the best spots. Trust me, you’ll leave with a full heart and a camera roll brimming with memories!

If you’re exploring Waikiki, make sure to stop by the Moana Surfrider, often referred to as the 'First Lady of Waikiki.' Built in 1901, this historic hotel is not only iconic for its gorgeous colonial architecture but also for the stories it holds.

Walking through its grand entrance feels like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into Hawaii’s golden era. Grab a drink at the Beach Bar, relax under the shade of the huge banyan tree, and take in the ocean views. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth a visit for the ambiance alone. It’s the perfect blend of history, elegance, and that laid-back Hawaiian vibe.
